7 abstract rug hooking design ideas

Abstract hooked rugs are a beautiful way to use lots of color, and to experiment with color! There are many ways to create an abstract style rug, and here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Multicolored Mania

This piece was created using only old strips of wool leftover from other projects, and moving across the piece by transitioning slowly from one color to the next. The strips were all different cuts, and is an 8"x10" size overall. This style could be done for a much larger rug and still look amazing.

2. Same style, all within the same colour theme

These two pieces work the same way as the previous one, but stuck to just one color theme, with an accent of yellow (like a sunrise splashing across the scene). A sparkle yarn for whipping the edges adds a little extra to these pieces.

3. All one piece of wool

Both of these pieces were completed by using one piece of wool that is mottled a beautiful purple/blue. This really shows the impact the direction of the hooking can have on the overall look, with the straight lines looking highly organized, and the random piece having a very different look. This is one of the easiest rugs to hook, as there is really no thinking involved, and with the right piece of mottled wool, the effect is gorgeous.

4. Squares

This technique can be used to create a wonderful rug, and once the initial colors are chosen, the hooker can pick and choose where colors are placed randomly. This type does require a little forethought during the design phase to ensure that a variety of sizes of squares are included.

5. Shapes, sort of

This one was intended to look like a meteor blasting through space, using a variety of red and pink pieces, along with some sparkle wool to create a shimmering look. Also easy to accomplish, many beautiful abstract pieces are simply designed by going with the flow and using whatever colors is available.

6. Checkerboard

Red and Purple are favorites here at Loopy, and this piece looks a bit like stained glass because of the variation in the colors. An extremely easy rug to design and hook, this one makes a perfect area rug for a (pretty fun) doll house!

7. Hit and Miss

Another great way to use up old strips of wool is with a hit and miss pattern, although the piece pictured was created using new wool because achieving a particular color theme was the focus. These can be done any size, with any color, and look amazing when finished.
